Why Volunteer

Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not. -- Dr. Seuss

Some tend to look at volunteering as a sort of free service. Others consider it as something for the unemployed to do while looking for work.  Naturally, I consider such people a tad hard-headed and hard-hearted, but I had my doubts before joining Progressive Volunteers. Was I being naive?  I mean what am I really going to get out of this? After my volunteering stint  and, after giving it some thought, I came up with a small list of how I personally benefited.   These, you should note, are taken from my experience; your milleage may vary.

Volunteering can lead to important contacts

I have always had the urge to put my skills to good use.  I didn't know exactly how I was going to do that, but I figured that by volunteering I would get a clearer picture. I do have to say that so far the volunteer experience has been one of a kind. I have met incredible people and gotten a chance to network through different platforms and events. My self- confidence also grew and I developed better social skills since I regularly met with groups of like-minded people with shared interests.

Progressive Volunteers is a community organization working to promote development projects in the Rauraka Slum of Nairobi, Kenya.

Our programmes are based around five themes:

  • Education and Empowerment

  • Skills and Economic Opportunities

  • Sanitation and Environment

  • Community Health

  • Peace and Safety.

We welcome anyone with an interest or background in these areas. Can you start a fundraising campaign at your school or work? Can you donate uneeded items (clothes, books, appliances, etc.), or donate in-kind services?

Currently, we have seven partner schools, four primary and three secondary. Subjects our volunteers teach include: English, Swahili, maths, social studies, religion, geography and science.

You can make a difference.
