Message from Jeremiah Mzee, Chairman
The children who attend the Ruaraka Slum schools face many challenges. These schools are informal, not backed by government funding, and are severely under-resourced, understaffed and overcrowded. The teacher-student ratio is 1:40 and it's not an odd thing to find 3-4 students sharing a desk. In addition, students in one room school houses are usually grouped into four areas. With no actual walls separating them, and with four classes happening simultaneously, you can only imagine the difficulty students have concentrating on their lessons.
The founders of Progressive Volunteers saw the challenges that these pupils faced and, in 2007, began to try to remedy the situation. Progressive Volunteers is one of the first community-run and youth-led volunteer organizations to offer such services in Kenya.
The organization has since grown from six members to over 165 local and national volunteers, nearly two dozen international volunteers and over 150 online volunteers, promoting our mission and agenda.
