Meet Some our Students and Teachers

The New Light Academy in Nairobi's Ruaraka slum teaches grades 9-12 (Forms 1-4). It usually instructs between 80 and 100 students. The shallow ditch in front carries off waste water from the uphill neighbors. .

The academy is compact, to say the least, and due to the low level funding available, students must make do on a daily basis.

For James, Emma and Catherine, this is "School Lane".

I understand my calling in life as a volunteer to help the community ‘align their perspective toward the truth.’ This truth is about who they are, what they are capable of, and how they can overcome what holds them back. I’ve been working to fulfill that calling over the past seven years, 30 hours a week, through teaching mentoring at risk students in the Ruaraka slum area. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of engaging pupils in the following schools, Greenstar Secondary School, New Light Academy, Lucy Education Center, Emmaus Education Centre and Glorious Friends Academy. All of the above schools are grossly underfunded and require our attention just to reach the level of other slum schools.
I teach business studies, English, life skills as well as a host of others. I look forward to developing young minds and contributing to a new breed of leaders that will help transform Kenya for the good. I have a teaching degree, and also hold a Bachelor of Adult Education and Community Development.
When I am not teaching at my university post, or volunteering, you will find me hanging out with my wife and son.
Thank you for your kind support,
